BOAT HANDLING INSTRUCTION

Boating Lessons Aboard Student's Boat

Boat handling, as with many relatively complex activities, is part art and part science. The art of boat handling is developed with practice over time. The science is developed through boat handling education, which, if properly done, can put piloting one’s craft safely and competently within grasp in a relatively short period of time. Captain Ron’s approach to boat handling instruction is to integrate conceptual learning and practice, and to follow a step by step approach to boat handling actions, replicating the approach used to train some of the most highly skilled pilots in the world, captains of jet aircraft. Captain Ron’s direct experience training other aircraft pilots in safe, effective procedures is the foundation of the interactive techniques used in his boat handing instruction. To date over 175 skippers of craft ranging from 16’ to 60’ have become competent captains of their vessels. Outlined below is a typical boat handling training session.

  Boat Handling Instruction Process

Tiar 43 ExpressThe session starts with a complete and logical explanation of the maneuver. For example, prior to practicing a docking action, the affect of the current, wind, and tide on the boat are reviewed, along with other factors affecting the maneuverability of the boat such as “payload”, engine power, and hull design. Other important factors such as the level and patterns of incoming and outgoing traffic, both recreational and commercial; visibility; and dock line and crew positioning are acknowledged and discussed, leading to an increased level of situational awareness and safety.

The second step typically involves a demonstration of the docking action performed by Captain Ron to help cement the concepts covered.

Multiple attempts of the docking process are encouraged to help you develop your feel for proper implementation of the boat handling procedure. Along the way Captain Ron shares his suggestions for how to most effectively connect the concepts behind smooth and safe docking with the actual procedure. This interactive process helps to ensure complete retention of the actions to accomplish the activity, and makes it possible for you to develop the skill and self-confidence to safely operate your craft on the water.
